What Microsoft Copilot actually does
Microsoft Copilot is an AI assistant built into Microsoft 365. It drafts documents, summarises meetings and emails, analyses spreadsheets and answers questions across your own files. It saves the most time on first drafts and summaries; it does not replace judgement or fix a messy setup.
What Copilot is
Copilot is generative AI embedded in the Microsoft 365 apps and grounded in your own tenant data. You meet it in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, plus a separate Copilot chat. It reads what you already have and helps you act on it.
Where it genuinely saves time
First drafts in Word, meeting recaps and action points in Teams, inbox triage and reply drafts in Outlook, formula and analysis help in Excel, and a first set of slides in PowerPoint. The common thread is summarising and drafting - the work that is easy to start badly and slow to finish.
Where it does not help (yet)
Copilot will not fix bad data or an undefined process, and it can be confidently wrong. It needs the right licence and sensible data governance, and it never removes the need for a human to review the output.
How to start well
Pick one or two high-frequency tasks, set data access and sensitivity labels correctly first, train the team on clear prompting, and measure the hours saved after a few weeks.
